Plant More Seeds

A lesson in optimism and starting small.

This year may look very different, but I wanted to share a post originally written in April of 2017. Despite the title, it is not just about gardening; it is about how we choose to look at the future.

Spring is an optimistic time. Birds sing, leaf buds unfurl in a riot of verdant green, and the garden awakens in a rush of growth. Recently, I’ve been reading A Garden from a Hundred Packets of Seed by James Fenton, and one simple passage struck a chord: “Plant some seeds and see how they grow.”

Every packet represents a possibility for nourishment or delight.

A seed is an amazing thing. I once learned that a saguaro cactus—which can reach heights of over 60 feet and weigh nearly 5,000 pounds—grows from a seed no larger than a grain of sand. Amazing! Not unlike the acorn from which a mighty oak grows.

We have to live our lives with passion and hope. This spring, I encourage you to be inspired, help others, and stay connected in small but meaningful ways. Whatever makes your heart sing, start small, but do it.

Plant some seeds and see how they grow.
